A line from SalsSky: The Chosen One

I gave a frightened city a story to hold onto.

Chapter Seven · What Silence Let Grow

On the stories we give frightened people

Sioux is exhausted. She is standing in her father's study, face to face with a man she thought was gone. He is unhurried. He is almost apologetic. And he is telling her, plainly, what he did. He shaped what a frightened city believed. He fed the rumors. He helped them along. He calls it giving people something to hold onto. There is no rage in how he says it. That is what makes it land so hard.

This moment notices something quiet and uncomfortable. When people are afraid and confused, they reach for a story. Almost any story. The story does not have to be true. It only has to be there. And the person who offers it, at the right moment, holds a kind of power they may not have earned.

You have probably done this in a smaller way. Offered a version of events that felt easier than saying you did not know. Or accepted one, because not knowing was too much to sit with.

What story are you still holding onto because the truth underneath it feels too uncertain to face?
