A line from SalsSky: The Chosen One
What he listened for now was its absence — that half-second of nothing that meant the world beneath him hadn't answered yet.
On learning to listen for silence
He is alone on a narrow mountain path, blindfolded, feeling his way forward one tap at a time. He has stopped hearing the sound the stick makes against stone. What he listens for now is the moment the stone says nothing back. That silence is not emptiness. It is information. It is the edge. Over days on this path, his attention has narrowed down to something most people never notice at all — the half-second between a question and an answer, the small gap where the world either holds or does not. He is not trying to see further. He is trying to hear more precisely what is already there.
Most of us move through our days waiting for confirmation. A clear sign. A sound that says the ground is solid. We rarely stop to notice what the quiet between signals is telling us. But sometimes the absence of an answer is the answer. Sometimes the pause before something speaks is the only honest thing in the room.
What in your life are you tapping at right now, waiting for the world to answer back?
