Carlos
First appears in Chapter I
The second of the two men from Mayaimi. He says almost nothing at the introduction and looks Sals over with the frank, assessing intensity of somebody pricing a horse before a long trip. He is the book's reminder that being appraised and being welcomed can happen in the same handshake. Miguel offers the words; Carlos does the arithmetic. Neither of them is presented as a villain, and the novel is quite disciplined about refusing to make that easy.
