Luis
First appears in Chapter I
Sals's closest friend and the first voice in the novel that is not Sals's own. A soldier who has slept badly and has not decided whether to mention it, which is most of what you need to know about him. He is the book's measure of the ordinary — not a foil, not comic relief, and never stupid. When Sals begins to change, Luis is the one whose reaction tells you how large the change actually is, because Luis is looking at him with no theory about it at all. He is also the one who worries out loud. That is rarer and more useful than it sounds: almost every other character in this book withholds something, and Luis simply does not.
