Sals's horse. A mahogany coat, ears that work independently of each other, and a habit of hearing footsteps before they have reached the door. He is in the glossary because the book takes him seriously. Stanley is the first thing in the novel that perceives more than the people around it and does not make anything of it — no mystery, no significance, just an animal mapping a world no human eye fully registers, calmly, while the men nearby discuss what they think is happening. Once you have noticed the book doing that with a horse, you start noticing how often it does it with everything else.
